How Do I Stay Motivated in Early Recovery?

Therapists and counselors probe into this area because motivation is critically important for recovery. During treatment and recovery, your level of motivation may not always be constant. Sometimes you might feel inspired or propelled to implement changes, while other times, you just feel defeated and recovery motivation hopeless. The key is to nurture that motivation and allow it to grow sustainably. But as we learn more about motivation, we understand that it is far more complex than that, and that there are countless social factors that go into helping someone develop and maintain the motivation to do anything.

recovery motivation

Take time for yourself and indulge in quiet moments in which you can meditate and reflect on yourself and your journey to recovery. Motivation is a single thing, but rather learning to select and use a range of skills appropriate to the situation. Identify your core values, create good habits and routines, create a good support system, and learn to play the mental game. Imagine how you’ll feel about relapsing after so much hard work, how disappointed your family will be, how hard it will be to tell your 12-Step group, and so on. Think about how bad things were in active addiction when you finally decided to get help. Picturing all of this clearly can make the momentary gratification of relapse seem small by comparison.

Can a Pet Help You Recover From Addiction?

Individuals who seek substance abuse treatment in order to improve their physical and mental wellbeing are more likely to succeed because their motivation is generally more sustainable than others. Individuals who are court-mandated or attempting to appease family members are less likely to be as successful in recovery as those individuals who seek recovery on their own accord.

Which stage of life is most difficult?

Note: Adolescence is the most difficult period of one's life. There are far too many significant life changes occurring in one's life, such as physical, psychological, and behavioural changes.

Support group meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous connect people who deal with behavioral problems caused by addiction. During meetings, participants share stories of their successes and failures during recovery. Listening to these testimonials and abiding by 12-step principles can inspire people to achieve or sustain sobriety.

Importance of Motivation in Addiction Recovery

You have more resources to deal with any problems that arise and you feel a greater sense of accountability. The last thing you’ll want to do is go to your 12-Step meeting and admit that you slipped up. That can be a powerful incentive to stay sober even when you don’t feel like it. Therefore, it’s important to create structures in your life to hedge against the risk of relapse on low motivation days. Part of that structure is made of healthy habits and routines. It typically takes about two months for a new behavior to become automatic, but after that, the healthy behavior is on autopilot.
